‘Religion and Politics’ - Adam Slate, Minister-elect
The Easter story tells a political tale: a man engaged in social action under an oppressive regime is executed for his ministry. Although places of worship today follow rules regarding how they can and cannot engage in political activity, Christianity and other major world religions have politics woven into their very origin stories and theologies. On this Easter Sunday, at a time when public dissent and protest are increasingly fraught with stronger regulation and closer scrutiny by authorities, we will consider how religion is necessarily countercultural, anti-oppressive, and political.
